Aircraft Maintenance Logbook Best Practices is a blog created and sponsored by Larry Hinebaugh and the team at V-Log Aircraft Digital Records Management, in the interest of promoting aviation logbook best practices.

aircraft maintenance logbook best practicesIn working with clients, we noticed several things:

  • Logbooks are vital to understanding the health, history and airworthiness of an aircraft, and are required by CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) 14, Part 43 Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance and Alteration.
  • There are very real financial and practical ramifications for aircraft owners when logbooks are not kept properly.
  • The type and condition of logbooks varies from thorough and well organized, to utterly horrific with the information unorganized, unreadable or missing altogether.

Logbooks are vital to understanding the health, history and airworthiness of an aircraft, and are required by CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) 14, Part 43 Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance and Alteration. Yet, in spite of the guidance set forth in FAR Part 43, the type and condition of information found in a majority of aircraft logbooks today runs from through and well organized, to utterly horrific with the information unorganized, unreadable or missing altogether. In many cases logbooks will also contain information that is not required by FAR 43 and is of no value to understanding the condition and/or airworthiness of the aircraft.

The bottom line is that logbooks are not well understood in our industry. Very little has been done to promote best practices and proper logbook care and etiquette in our private and business aircraft industry. This equates to a very real need for this type of promotional educational service to the aviation community.
